Registration/Roster and Substitutes

  1. Team rosters/waivers release forms must be completed by each individual player before teams are allowed to compete.
  2. Competitive teams may consist of up to 6 people (only 4 playing on the court at a time) and recreational teams may consist of up to 8 people (only 6 playing on the court at a time). There must be at least as many women as men on the court at any given time with 2 men and 1 woman being the only exception. Players playing in the recreational division must rotate in on the serve.
  3. Teams may make roster substitutions up to 30 minutes before the start of the tournament. If a player is injured, a substitution may be made only with the opposing team captain’s consent.
  4. All rosters will be frozen at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 12, 2009.

Start Times, Warm Ups, and Forfeits

  1. Warm-ups will be allowed immediately following the captain’s meeting at 8:30 a.m. Once pool play begins, there will be a 5-minute warm up between matches.
  2. If at the starting time as per the game schedule, either team does not have enough players that game will result in a forfeit. There will be another 5-minute time limit to produce enough players for the second game of the match. If at that time there are still not enough players, the second game of the match will be forfeited.
  3. If a team has the minimum numbers of players allowed at the starting time (although they may be waiting for other players to arrive), the game must start at the scheduled time.

Games, Length, and Scoring

  1. All teams will be required to work as per their scheduled time listed on the game schedule that will be posted on the clipboard at each court. Working will include making sure that the next game starts on time, keeping score using the flip scorers that will be courtside at each net, and recording the score for the match he/she worked at the main scoring tent. WORKING TEAMS WILL NOT BE MAKING CALLS SUCH AS NET CONTACT, LINE IN OR OUT OR MISHANDLED SETS. Each team will work approximately two matches during pool play.
  2. All games will be regular scoring to 11 points, win by 2, or first team to 15.
  3. Recreational division only: There will be two “free calls” available to each team. Before 10:00 a.m., each team will have the option to purchase one free call for $35 or two for $60. If any team decides not to purchase one or both free calls, these free calls will be made available for sale to any team that has already purchased both of its free calls after the 10:00 deadline to purchase. These free calls may be used to reverse a call at any time except at game point.

  4. Examples:
    • Your team is serving and the serve goes into the net. You may use a free call and retain the serve only. No point is scored.
    • Your team is serving and the other team wins the sideout. You may use a free call to retain the serve only. No point is scored.
    • The other team is serving and wins the point. You may use a free call to get the serve but they still get the point.

Any team or player abusing the following rules will be issued a warning for the first violation. This will be considered a yellow card violation. Any subsequent violation will be considered a red card violation. A first red card violation will result in an automatic point (and sideout if violating team served). Two red card violations will result in dismissal from the tournament.

  1. Any verbal abuse of any player, volunteer, or head referee for any reason.

  3. Any flagrant “trash talking” to the opposing team.
